Coo-Coo CLBZ 9 (3846)
Cool Buzz is a young Amsterdam based Label for alternative Roots and modern Blues. Dont expect any predictable material here: Cool Buzz takes all the room for experimenting. This already resulted in a few fresh and exciting albums of for example Boyd Small, Sugarcane and Tee.
Now there are two new releases from the wayward firm and again it seems that Cool Buzz knows were to fish.
Coo-Coo of T-99 is a truly breathtaking debut, that from start to finish fascinates and surprises.
Under the productional expertise of Walter Broes (Seatsniffers) this trio, consisting of Mischa den Haring (voc./gtr.), Thijs Gorter (bass) and Henk Punter (dms.), constantly delivers the goods. If the idea exists in the Netherlands that everything what comes from abroad is tastier, or the grass is always greener on the other side, T-99 will knock down that idea with there infectious mix of variable styles that have their base in the music of the 50s and 60s, but always sound like blues.
Directly from the opening song, Your Fool To Long, they hit bulls-eye. Sincere pleading vocals about love, where Mischas worried voice is being supported by Boyd Small (Backing vocals) and a sober but solid rhythm section. Dirty and rock solid is the guitar on So Many Times, a very mean shuffle that brings to mind the early days of the Paladins, marked by a very authentic sound, sober but never overdone.
What to think about the refreshing interpretation of Eddie Taylors Im Gonna Love You.
I have never heard a better version of this classic. Double Eyed Whammy, a song from Tommy Ridgley, combines blues and soul in a way that will make the kettle whistle, the potatoes boil over and your hips start shaking all by them selves. This effect is getting even stronger through the effective use of the saxophone by Arend Bouwmeester.
The whole album breathes a subtle atmosphere. Everything is being subordinated to the pureness en sincerity that strikes you each time you play the album. |
